- Story Text: Thousands of Palestinian protestors have demonstrated
in Beirut and south Lebanon camps slamming Israel's occupation
of Jenin, in the West Bank and denouncing some Arab
leaders for their seeming reluctance to support Palestinians.
Thousands of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon demonstrated
on Thursday (April 11, 2002) in a show of support for Palestinians
in the West Bank, and denounced Arab leaders whose countries
have signed peace with Israel.
Nearly 8,000 demonstrators at the Aen el-Hilweh camp in south
Lebanon, waved Palestinian flags and carried pictures of
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, confined to his office in
the West Bank town of Ramallah by the Israelis.
The protesters set on fire boxes of U.S-made cigarettes to
express their belief in Washington's bias against the Palestinians.
At a separate demonstration at the Bourj el-Barajneh camp in
Beirut, nearly 1,000 Palestinians marched, chanting obscene
slogans about Jordanian King Abdullah and Egyptian President
Hosni Mubarak, whose countries have signed peace with Israel.
"Where is (Egyptian president) Hosni Mubarak, where is (Jordanian)
King Abdullah?" asked one demonstrator.
"Even if it costs a million martyrs we will go back to Palestine."
said another.
Ignoring calls from U.S. President George W. Bush to halt its
offensive, Israel launched fresh raids into two Palestinian towns
and a refugee camp on Thursday, but said it had withdrawn
from dozens of other places in the past 24 hours.
The raids were part of a military campaign launched by
Israel on March 29 after a Palestinian suicide bomber
killed 27 Israelis in a seaside hotel.
A suicide attack which killed eight Israeli bus passengers
on Wednesday and Palestinian charges that 500 of their
brethren have been killed in Israel's 13-day-old military
campaign undermined hopes of staunching the violence.
In Lebanon, the Hizbollah guerrilla group offered to free
captive Israeli colonel Elhanan Tannenbaum in return
for the safety of some 100 Palestinian fighters besieged
in Jenin refugee camp.
At least 1,256 Palestinians and 445 Israelis have
been killed since the uprising began in September
2000 after talks on a final peace settlement stalled.
