- Story Text: At least 100,000 Israelis gather to take part in the
7th annual pride parade
At least 100,000 Israelis brought the coastal city
of Tel Aviv to life in a blaze of colour on Friday (June
25) as they celebrated the town's seventh annual gay pride
parade.
Gay couples kissed as dancers, wearing everything from
bikinis to fury boots, gyrated on decorated floats.
Some onlookers cheered on participants from their
balconies while others brought their families to watch the
spectacle.
Marchers started off from Rabin Square, where former
Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was slain in 1995, with
festivities concluding at a nearby park.
About 1,000 police officers, soldiers, and volunteers
provided security for the parade.
"I am here to see the party, to see people celebrate,
happy people. And it's very good that in Israel, today,
people can freely exhibit their sexuality, and party" said
Shahar Inbar, one of the participants.
Israel, home to a majority of secular Jews, is the only
country in the Middle East which holds such parades. Israel
is also the only country in the region that has legalised
gay sex, fuelling anger among its minority Ultra-Orthodox
community.
Reforms for legitimising the lesbian and gay movement
in Israel started in the 1990s, with the establishment of
new laws and the ending of discriminatory rules in the
military in 1993. Most recently, in 2000, the age of
consent was lowered to 16.
