- Story Text: Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said Israel was ready to
"hit its enemies any place and in any way" .
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said on Tuesday (October
7) Israel was ready to "hit its enemies any place and in
any way" two days after an Israeli air raid in Syria.
Sharon took a tough line but made no specific threats
in his first public comments since Sunday's strike on what
Israel said was a training camp for Palestinian militants.
Tensions have risen in the Middle East since the attack.
"Israel will not be deterred from defending its
citizens and will hit its enemies any place and in any
way," Sharon told a memorial service marking the 30th
anniversary of the 1973 Middle East War which was broadcast
live on Israeli Radio.
"At the same time we will not miss any opening and
opportunity to reach an agreement with our neighbours and
peace," he said.
The strike was Israel's deepest air raid in Syria in
three decades. U.S. President George W. Bush said on Monday
Israel had the right to self-defence but the White House
also urged Israel and Syria not to fuel tension and
hostilities.
Israel carried out the air raid following a Palestinian
suicide bombing that killed 19 people on Saturday.
Four-year old Ali Yassin died as a result of shrapnel
injuries from a missile that fell on his grandfathers house
in the southern village of Houla in Lebanon, near the
Israeli border. His brother, Ahmed Yassin was also wounded
in the blast and was being treated in hospital.
One security source told Reuters in Beirut the
missile's origin was unclear, and other security sources
said it was probably fired at Israel from inside Lebanon
but fell short.
The army said a soldier was shot dead at the border on
Monday (October 6), and military sources blamed his death
on Hizbollah guerrillas backed by Iran and Syria. Hizbollah
denied its forces had been involved in any shooting.
An official from the United Nations peacekeeping force
in Lebanon said one of its water trucks was hit by three
bullets fired from inside Israel during the incident.
Israeli military sources blamed the soldier's death at
the border with Lebanon on Hizbollah guerrillas backed by
Iran and Syria.
Israel's border with Lebanon had been relatively quiet
since August when Israel attacked militant targets after
Hizbollah guerrillas killed an Israeli teenager.
