SYNOPSIS: Israel's Golani Brigade, which was recently on patrol near the disputed border with Syria, took part in manoeuvres in the Judean Desert on Thursday. Supported by aircraft, armoured vehicles and artillery, troops simulated an attack on a fortified position.
During the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, the Golani brigade played a major part in the Israeli attack on the Syrian Golani Heights. This recent exercise involved both regular and reserve troops.
The mock enemy position consisted of three lines of fortification; a style of defence which the Israeli's expect would be designed by Soviet military planners. The exercises were held on terrain completely unfamiliar to the battalion commanders.
Live ammunition was used, but no casualties were reported.
