- Story Text: On Wednesday (May 13), israel released 55 Arab Guerrillas, the last of those captured at Karameh in March 1968. Karameh, a major Al Fatah base north of Jericho, was one of four Arab guerrilla bases attacked by Israeli troops, supported by tanks, aircraft and helicopters, in a punitive attack aimed at wiping them out. The Israelis said they killed 150 guerrillas and took an undisclosed number of prisoners in the 15-hour action.
The guerrillas were driven in trucks from Ramle prison, and handed over to Jordanian authorities waiting at the Jordan end of the bridge. There to manage the whole operation was Mr. Rochat, head of the local International Red Cross Committee.
There was a minimum of ceremony, with one guerrilla crossing the bridge at a time, escorted by Red Cross representatives.
