  • Story Text: Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Dayan believes the coming visit by United States Secretary of State Dr. Henry Kissinger is the best chance of peace between Israel and Syria.

    Mr. Dayan made the remarks in parliament in jerusalem on Monday (29 April) in answer to opposition Likud party leader Shmuel Tamir. Mr. Tamir had said the Israeli government was too soft with the Syrians and was ready to yield to American pressure to withdraw from Syrian territory.

    Mr. Dyan replied that the agreement was not an American matter and the Israeli government would examine the Syrian proposals with an open mind.

    Mr. Dayan added that the Syrians had no chance of gaining from the present fighting. He thought they were continuing to act tough because they had no fear of running out of supplies.

    Dr. Kissinger is due in Jerusalem on Thursday for talks with Israeli leaders. He will then move between Jerusalem and the Syrian capital Damascus to try and work out a disengagement agreement.
