- Story Text: Hundreds of German Jews, bound for the 25th Anniversary celebrations in Israel, have been enjoying a peaceful cruise on the liner Hanseatic, free from the tensions and tight security surrounding United States and British Jews sailing on the Queen Elizabeth 2.
On Wednesday (18 April) the Hanseatic called in at Istanbul, and the pilgrims toured the city. They visited mosques among other places of interest, and the entire visit passed without incident.
SYNOPSIS: The liner Hanseatic visited Istanbul on Wednesday. On board were hundreds of German Jewe on their way to Israel's 25th Anniversary celebrations. But there was none of the tension and tight security surrounding the similar voyage of the British liner, the Queen Elizabeth the Second.
The German Jews wandered freely through the streets of Istanbul. Their carefree visit was a striking contrast to the journey of the British and United States Jews on the QE2. They've been surrounded by guards wherever they've gone ashore. In Istanbul, the German pilgrims became ordinary tourists. The whole visit passed free of incident, including their tour of Moslem mosques.
