- Story Text: Rare animals with biblical connections arrive at Johannesburg zoo from Israel as part of a breeding programme called Project Noah's Ark.
Three rare species of animal, often mentioned in the bible, arrived at Johannesburg zoo from Israel on Friday (March 29).
The animals, a white oryx, three mountain gazelles and a pair of sand foxes, are among the world's most endangered species. It is hoped that the animals will breed and some of their offspring can be returned to their natural home in the wilds of the Holy Land.
Project Noah's Ark, as the endeavour is known, is also hoping to bring more "biblical" animals to Johannesburg Zoo.
Rob Schneider, chairman of the Noah's Ark project, said "It's a multi-purpose project. It has conservation value, educational value and historical value. The idea is to help preserve these very rare and endangered biblical species to give South Africa and overseas visitors an opportunity to share in the splendours and natural heritage of the Holy Land."
