  • Story Text: The Israeli Foreign Minister, Mr Ebba Eban, arrived in Washington yesterday (Wednesday, May the 20th) to have discussions with Government officials on the Middle East situation.

    Mr Eban flew to Andrews Air Force Base from Canada amid indication that the Nixon administration was unwilling to agree to give Israel more aircraft unless it became convinced that the presence of Soviet pilots in Egypt had tipped the military balance against Israel.

    Mr Eban said he had come to discuss what the response should be in the new Soviet challenge in the Middle East.

    Mr Eban's first engagement was to meet the Secretary of State, Mr William Rogers, at the State Department. Later, after an hour meeting with Mr Rogers, Mr Eban told reporters he had given the Secretary a full account of Israel's concern over growing Soviet involvement on the Arab side.

    Before meeting Mr Rogers, Mr Eban spoke to reporters.....
