- Story Text: Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Sunday (September 3) called on Lebanon to heed his requests for peace talks.
"If the Lebanese PM would reply to the many requests I passed on to him-- through different people-- to sit down together, shake hands, make peace and end once and for all the fanaticism and the hatred that part of his nation shows towards us," Olmert said.
"I hope that this day will come soon," he added.
Olmert made his comments during a speech to high school students in the northern town of Ma'alot-Tarshiha as the school year began across the country.
The Prime Minister visited schools in the Galilee in northern Israel, a region that suffered rocket strikes during the 34 days long war between Israel and Hizbollah.
Thirty two schools were damaged by Katyusha rockets fired by Hizbollah guerillas from south Lebanon.
Israel's education authority rushed to repair the damages before the school year began, but many of the buildings will take months to repair.
Some damage could be seen in school structures in the town of Kiryat Shmona on the border with Lebanon. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
