- Story Text: The situation in Lebanon is deteriorating. President Elias Sarkis has withdrawn his threat to resign but factions within the Palestine Liberation Front have fought among themselves, and United Nations' troops have been killed, wounded, and in one case abducted.
SYNOPSIS: These soldiers were injured at Taibe, in the Eastern Sector of South Lebanon on Wednesday (12 July). They are part of the Nepalese contingent of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). It was reported that they came under fire from Palestinians. They're recuperating in a hospital in Israel.
Several of these soldiers were injured in a landmine blast. About 40 of their fellow members in UNIFIL were abducted on Wednesday and held by Palestine forces for about five hours. Among them were Iranian, French and Senegalese troops. It was reported that they had been seized by hard line members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). It was reported to be the detention of the UNIFIL members that set off the fighting among the Palestinian forces.
Several Palestinians were reported to have been killed in the fighting.
