Stone-throwing Palestinians clashed repeatedly with Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) troops on the West Bank on March 2 in the twelfth week of protests in the Occupied Territories. At least 79 Palestinians have died in the disturbances since December 9. In Ramallah, IDF soldiers made several arrests of Palestinian protests after dispersing a demonstration with a tear gas barrage. At least one youth was beaten after his arrest. A member of the Italian Parliament and two other Italian nationals chained themselves to a pole outside the Amari refugee camp near Ramallah to protest against Israel's handling of the uprising. The Parliamentarian, Mario Capanna of the left-wing Proletarian Democratic Movement, is visiting the Occupied Territories on a study mission. Israeli police arrived on the scene, but when they discovered Capanna's identity they left without intervening. In Jerusalem, police arrested 15 Jewish art students who demonstrated on a main street against Israel's handling of Arab unrest. Police said that the Bezalel Art Academy was given permission for a costume parade on the occasion of the Jewish holiday, Purim. But the students defied the conditions of their permit by appearing in black masks and carrying signs saying 'let's not lose our human face'.
