- Story Text: Hundreds of mourners attended a funeral service on Thursday (July 24) for a 20-year-old Israeli soldier who was killed in Gaza fighting.
Daniel Pomerantz was killed on Sunday (July 20) in the Shejaia district in northeast Gaza which saw some of the worst fighting since Israel launched its offensive on the Palestinian territory on July 8 after cross-border rocket strikes by militants intensified.
In its push against militants in the embattled Shejaia, Israel suffered its worst losses in the offensive, with 13 soldiers killed.
The number of Palestinian fatalities reached 72 from Sunday's fighting alone.
Pomerantz was buried in his his hometown Kfar Azar after his mother appealed to authorities to open a cemetary in the central community.
Israel has lost at least 32 soldiers in clashes inside Gaza and with Hamas raiders who have slipped under the fortified frontier in tunnels.
The Palestinian death toll in Gaza reached 794 on Thursday, officials said.
Elsewhere, in the central city of Tel Aviv, dozens of Israeli residents protested in solidarity with the the Israeli army and its war against the Isamist Hamas in Gaza.
"So right now what we are doing right now here here is supporting the troops supporting the action to abolish totally the Hamas terrorist groups and by doing that, standing here we are saying yes for truthfulness, yes for right moral concepts and this is Israel," said miltary supporter, Guy Zalmanovitz.
Gazan authorities said Israeli forces shelled a shelter at a U.N.-run school on Thursday, killing at least 15 people as the Palestinian death toll in the conflict climbed over 760 and attempts at a truce remained elusive.
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed his horror at the attack on the school at Beit Hanoun in the northern Gaza strip.
Ban later arrived to Cairo where he was expected to meet U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who has been working the telephones to try to broker an elusive truce.
Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal said on Wednesday (July 23) his fighters had made gains against Israel and voiced support for a humanitarian truce, but only if Israel eased restrictions on Gaza's 1.8 million people. Hamas wants Egypt to open up its border with Gaza too.
Palestinian rockets and mortar bombs have also killed three civilians in Israel. Such attacks surged last month as Israel cracked down on Hamas in the occupied West Bank, triggering the July 8 air and sea barrage on the Gaza Strip that escalated into an invasion a week ago. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
