- Story Text: Northern Gaza was shaken by huge explosions on Saturday morning (July 26) up until just minutes before a truce was due to take effect between Israel and Palestinian militant groups in the Gaza Strip.
The 12-hour U.N.-requested humanitarian cessation was to pave the way for efforts to secure a long-term cease-fire.
Israel's military said it would hold fire starting at 8 am (0500 GMT) but would continue searching for tunnels used by militants. A spokesman for the Islamist group Hamas, which is dominant in the Gaza Strip, said all Palestinian factions would abide by the brief truce.
The large explosions were seen from 0620am (0320 GMT) onwards on the Gaza skyline and were continuing minutes before 8am (0500 GMT). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
