- Story Text: Some Israeli soldiers were allowed to spend a few hours with their families on Saturday (July 26), as a 12-hour ceasefire in the Gaza Strip was under way.
The sometimes emotional encounters took place at a checkpoint between Israel and a closed military zone.
The soldiers said they had been in service for between two weeks and several months. All said they would have to be back in their units by the end of the day.
In Kibbutz Ginosar, meanwhile, relatives and friends were mourning the death of 21-year-old Staff Sergeant Guy Boyland.
Boyland was killed on Friday (July 25) during fighting in southern Gaza, the Israeli army said on Saturday.
Israel launched its offensive on July 8 and vowed to halt repeated rocket fire out of Gaza by Hamas militants who want to break a blockade of the territory.
Since then, 985 Palestinians have been killed, among them many civilians, as well as 37 Israeli soldiers and 3 civilians. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
