- Story Text: Women farmers in Mexico City used International Women's Day on Wednesday (March 8) to denounce poverty in the countryside and demand respect and protection for migrant female farmers in the country and the United States.
The demonstration was led by organisations that make up the Authentic Field Front.
Women workers from all over the country gathered at the Monument to the Revolution in the middle of the city to denounce inequality, discrimination against women and girls.
"Women's rights are not respected. It has been very slow and it will continue to be slow but finally we have to make ground because we won't get anything free of charge. We have to fight from the bottom," said a farmer from Chihuahua, Guadalupe Chavez Valles.
A farmer from Tabasco, Guadalupe Chavez Valles, said the demonstration intended to send a message to the government.
"We are showing the government that women have strength, can fight and even though we work in the field, we have strength," Chavez Valles said.
While a musical group played on a stage, women held up banners in the blazing sun.
"I think that equality in terms of work and wages because sometimes we have the same job but wages for a woman are lower than they are for men. We want that equality," said Chimalhuacan farmer, Miriam Gallegos.
Holding up banners reading: "Women united in fight for equality equity and justice," they called on authorities, civil society organizations and the general public to redouble their efforts to achieve gender equality, so that women and men have equal opportunities for development.
U.S. President Donald Trump's immigration policies could lead to collective expulsions of migrants in a breach of international law, the United Nations human rights chief said on Wednesday. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
