- Story Text: Iraqi federal police on Wednesday (March 8) mounted a house-to-house search in the district of Mosul that they had recaptured from the Islamic State jihadist group the day before, hunting for remaining militants and booby-trap bombs.
Elite Interior Ministry Rapid Response troops had seized the Dawasa district and the wrecked buildings of the provincial government headquarters on Tuesday (March 7), securing a new platform for their advance on Mosul's densely populated old city.
Islamic State snipers continued to fire at the main government building on Wednesday, restricting the soldiers' movements.
Loud explosions and heavy gunfire echoed across the district as helicopters attacked targets deeper into western Mosul, where government forces came under rifle and rocket fire.
Many of Dawasa's remaining residents, short of food, or homeless because their houses had been set on fire by departing militants, packed up their belongings to move to government refugee camps. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
