- Story Text: Thousands turned out in Buenos Aires on Wednesday (March 8) to march for women's rights and causes on International Women's Day.
Argentines joined women in some 40 countries throughout the world on a global women's strike which also focused on gender violence and broadening gender rights.
Protesters took on a variety of issues from rights for sex workers to abortion.
Many demonstrators focused on violence against women. In Argentina, femicide is a major concern.
Official figures released in 2016 revealed that from June 2015 to May 2016, over 270 women and girls were killed in Argentina.
"Today, we women say enough. It is a day when we are saying we are fed up with femicides, which are the most extreme expression of macho violence. And we are also saying we have had enough of historical inequalities that push us to be second class citizens," said protester Mariana Carbaja.
According to another protester, the situation is only getting worse.
"If they don't give us the budget for the violence law, femicides are going to rise. Now one is happening. Every 18 hours and last year it was one every 30 hours," said activist, Vilma Ripoll.
Statistics published in the Argentine media late last year revealed that a reported 99% of Argentine women suffered some form of violence with a partner. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
