- Story Text: U.S. and Romanian soldiers preformed training exercises at the Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base on Wednesday (March 8) as part of Atlantic Resolve operation, meant to show U.S. commitment to its European allies.
The U.S. soldiers arrived from Thessaloniki, Greece, on March 2 to support the U.S. Army's 2nd Battalion, and carried out exercises on Wednesday to train their Romanian partners in getting in and out of UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters.
Russian military involvement in Ukraine and Georgia has stoked fears in the Baltics that their former Soviet master might eventually try something similar there, and the move is part of NATO's strengthening of its eastern flank.
Capt. James Bates, the commander of Bravo Company for the 10th Combat Aviation Brigade's (CAB) 2nd Battalion, said the deployment in Romania was essential for the operation.
"Here you see the American army, our aviation force, our company, task force here, as arrived, we have set up and we are conducting missions. And to include our Romanian partners is essential to our ability to support Atlantic Resolve," Bates said.
Since April 2014 U.S. troops have been conducting continuous multinational training and security cooperation activities with allies and partners in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
