- Story Text: Clashes erupted in central Athens on Wednesday (March 8) between farmers and police during a protest over pension and tax reforms.
Farmers tried to rush a police line blocking the protesters from approaching the Ministry of Agriculture. Farmers struck out at police with shepherds crooks, who responded with batons and tear gas. Some farmers smashed the windows of two parked police buses.
The more than 1,000 farmers had arrived in Athens from the island of Crete overnight.
Farmers said they are angry over increases in taxes and pension contributions as part of the government's continuous economic reforms, in the midst of low produce prices and high production costs. It is the second protest in a month by farmers, and follows several protests by other labour groups as the government is attempting to come to an agreement with its international creditors over the next set of reforms to be implemented in the country. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
