- Story Text: While the world's best footballers parade their skills in the stadiums of France, robots are providing a suitable distraction in the second Robot World Cup (RoboCup) in Paris.
The week-long tournament will pit teams of robots against each other, but it isn't all about the glory of lifting the trophy.
The competition took place at the Science Museum of the Cite des Sciences of la Villette, in conjunction with an international computer science conference.
About 70 teams from 70 countries will compete for the championship and teams from Japan, United States, Germany and France are among the favorites.
The robot soccer teams are composed of up to five robots a side, each equipped with television cameras to follow the movements of the ball. They attempt to score goals by manipulating the ball through a series of pre-programmed moves.
The aim is to spur feeble humans on to develop ever-more-powerful robot systems incorporating autonomous agents, real-time reasoning, robotics, and sensor-fusion.
