- Story Text: Intelligence Chiefs from 28 countries met in Tokyo on Wednesday (February 16) to discuss issues ranging from terrorism to disaster relief.
The aim of the 4th Asia Pacific Intelligence Chiefs Conference is to increase the sharing of information between countries to help combat problems that have become more global in nature.
"There is always the traditional threat of a single country causing instability in the region. In addition to this, international terrorism, safety on the seas, large natural disasters and such global problems must be confronted and worked on together," said Japanese Senior Vice Defense Minister Katsuya Ogawa while addressing the military chiefs.
The conference is co-hosted by Japan's Defense Intelligence Headquarters and the U.S. Pacific Command Directorate for Intelligence.
The theme of the conference was sharing expertise between countries with the regional U.S. Intelligence Director emphasizing that more cooperation was needed to deal with emerging threats.
"The challenges we face as a region are significant, ever-changing, ever-complex, and pose great risk to the security and prosperity of the region. I submit that we improve our chances of providing that security that the region merits and deserves if we all continue to work together," said Rear Admiral Elizabeth Train.
The conference started on the 15th of February and lasts until 18. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
