- Story Text: Academy award-winning director Ang Lee announced on Friday (October 29) that the filming of his next movie, Life of Pi, will take place in India and his home country Taiwan.
At a news conference announcing Lee's first 3D fantasy adventure, he said the filming will start in the central city of Taichung, next year in January. The film will also include the southern Kenting beaches.
Life of Pi is an adaptation of Yann Martel's best-selling novel that depicts a young boy, Pi Patel, who survived a shipwreck and drifted at sea until he was finally found with a bengal tiger.
Lee casted 17-year-old Suraj Sharma in the leading role after auditioned more than 3,000 boys, and said that the protagonist must be someone who's able to touch the audience with a simple expression in the eyes.
"Because the story takes place at sea, so it is important to cast someone with the right dispositions, he doesn't have any monologues, unlike Tom Hanks, everything he does has to attract people to realise a lot of the human spiritual needs, and all these will depend on the character's dispositions, and I wish to discover them in the new actor," said Lee.
Lead by Lee, a group of 150 production crew came to inspect the filming locations in Taiwan, where approximately 70 per cent of the filming will take place.
Lee said the film is challenging, because it includes three of the most unpredictable elements: water, children, and animals.
"I hope this will be a new theatrical experience, because it's 3D and because of its script, I hope this will be a breakthrough, I am excited about filming this. We have been through some struggles but we still have a long way ahead. I hope to receive everyone's support, and I will put in all the effort to do my best. I hope everyone enjoys the process, and thank you for the support," said Lee in the final remarks to journalists.
The movie is scheduled to premier on December 14. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
