- Story Text: Scuffles between left-wing demonstrators and police
have broken out on the eve of the by now traditional Berlin
May Day riots and several people were arrested.
According to Berlin police, several thousands of
people gathered in the Mauerpark where the Berlin Wall once
stood on Friday night (April 30) and peacefully celebrated
the so-called Walpurgisnacht on the eve of May Day, a
public holiday in Germany.
Some of the youths threw rocks at police standing by in
riot gear near Mauerpark in the trendy Prenzlauer Berg
district of Berlin, home to many young artists and
students. Several rioters were detained, according to
police.
