- Story Text: Indonesia's President Yudhoyono says Sumatra
earthquake that triggered tsunami is worst disaster since
1883 Krakatoa eruption and appeals for international
assistance.
Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said
on Friday (December 31, 2004) that the weekend earthquake and
tsunami off the coast of Sumatra has become the country's
worst disaster since the 1883 eruption of Mount Krakatoa
that killed 36,000.
"Not since the eruption of Krakatoa in 1883, have we
been hit so hard by the devastating wrath of nature. We
mourn, we cry, and our hearts weep -- witnessing thousands
of those killed left rigid in the streets. And we witness
those who survive almost losing hope and deep in sadness
and confusion," Yudhoyono said in his New Year's Eve speech
in the Indonesian capital Jakarta.
Indonesia has suffered the biggest number of victims
from the Asian tsunami, with nearly 80,000 known dead, a
toll that could rise to 100,000 in Aceh alone, the province
closest to the quake's epicentre.
"We pray for strength in facing such a difficult
trial. We urge all to join hands with the spirit of
patriotism and we appeal for international solidarity to
deal with such a calamity of nature that goes beyond our
imagination. I ask people from all walks of life to help
our brothers and sisters as best they could. Let us help,"
Yudhoyono said.
Triggered by a magnitude 9.0 earthquake off Indonesia's
Sumatra island, Sunday's earthquake and tsunamis that
followed have killed more than 125,000 people in 13
countries around the Indian Ocean.
