Italians are very close to their armed forces, to the families of those who died, soldiers, Carabinieri, civilians and wounded. For decades, Italy has committed itself to work as a peacekeeping force all over the world, carrying out missions often sadly marked by massacres and deaths. We will not give in to those responsible of this horrendous attack. The fight against terrorism is a priority for all of us. Italy has been able to fight efficiently against internal terrorism (possible reference to the latest arrests carried out in Italy in connection with the Red Brigade group). Free people must always be more united and determined to fight against international terrorism. "My visit to the United States, after today's massacre, takes on more urgency. In a few hours I will meet the Vice President Cheney and Secretary of State Colin Powell. In view of the worsening situation in Iraq, we must aim to become more efficient in our European-Atlantic ties and the United Nations." 2.44 4. - Story Text: Italian President Carlo Ciampi expresses grief
for eighteeen Italians killed in Iraq suicide attack.
Italian President Carlo Ciampi on Wednesday
(November 12) said "we will not give in to those
responsible of this horrendous attack" following a bombing
that killed 18 Italians in the armed forces' biggest single
loss of life since World War Two.
The apparent suicide attack looked likely to stoke
anti-war sentiments in Italy, where some opposition parties
demanded its 2,300 troops be withdrawn.
Sixteen personnel were killed at the Carabinieri police
base. At least six of those had been due to return home on
Saturday. Two Italian civilians and nine Iraqis were also
among the 27 dead.
President Ciampi was scheduled to meet U.S. Vice
President Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Colin Powell
on Wednesday evening. He will meet President George W Bush
on Friday.
