- Story Text: French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine has held
talks in Cairo with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, centred
on how to halt 11 weeks of Israeli and Palestinian
violence.
Later at a joint news conference with Egyptian Foreign
Minister Amr Moussa, Vedrine said all efforts must be made to
all side to implement the Sharm el-Sheikh agreement.
Asked about the George W. Bush victory in the U.S.
Presidentail election, Moussa said his government would
continue to work for peace in the Middle East with any U.S.
administration.
Mubarak and Vedrine met on Thursday (December 14)
and discussed how to halt 11 weeks of Israeli-Palestinian
violence.
"Every effort should be exerted to jointly implement the
Sharm el-Sheikh commitments with no preconditions," Vedrine,
whose country holds the European Union's rotating presidency,
told reporters after his talks with Mubarak.
He was referring to a U.S. -brokered ceasefire deal reached
by Israeli and Palestinian leaders at a summit meeting in the
Egyptian Red Sea resort in October. The truce failed to hold.
Vedrine welcomed the arrival in the region this week of a
U.S. -led commission created under the Sharm el-Sheikh
agreement to investigate the roots of Israeli-Palestinian
violence.
The commission, led by former U.S. Senator George
Mitchell, briefed Mubarak in Cairo on Tuesday.
"The fact-finding commission's visit to the region is a
good indicator even if it does not reach a final solution,"
Vedrine said through an interpreter.
Vedrine, accompanied by EU Middle East envoy Miguel Angel
Moratinos, was due to hold more talks with Egyptian officials
before flying to Israel and Palestinian-ruled areas on Friday.
He may also go to Amman if time permits.
At least 319 people, including 268 Palestinians, 13
Israeli Arabs and 38 Israeli soldiers and civilians, have been
killed since Palestinian protests against Israeli occupation
erupted in late September. Palestinians have demanded an
international force to protect civilians from the Israeli
army.
