- Story Text: President Anwar Sadat of Egypt was sworn-in for a second six year term of office in Cairo Saturday (16 October). The ceremony, at Egypt's People's Assembly (Parliament), took place only a few hours before he was due to meet other Arab leaders in Riyadh, the Saudi Arabian capital, in a bid to end the Lebanese conflict.
SYNOPSIS: Last month President Sadat won a massive majority in a national referendum on whether he should continue as head-of-state. The exact percentage of valid votes in his favour was 99.939, almost ten per cent higher than his vote in 1970 when he was first elected President following the death of Gamal Abdel Nasser. The overwhelming majority has reinforced Mr. Sadat's position at a time when he is seeking to strengthen Egypt's role in the quest for peace in Lebanon.
Reading the oath at the ceremony, President Sadat, who is 57, swore to uphold Egypt's independence and territorial integrity. President Sadat has had no serious rival for the presidency -- a fact which was highlighted by the absence of any competing names on the ballot paper in the referendum. In spite of lacking the emotional appeal of his predecessor. Mr. Sadat's recent vote of confidence matches the support for the late President Nasser in similar polls.
In a purely formal move which is normal presidency, Egyptian Prime Minister, Mamdouh Salem, submitted his government's resignation soon after the swearing-in. As expected, the Government was asked to stay on until parliamentary elections scheduled for October 28.
