- Story Text: Supporters of former president Alberto Fujimori
request that he be allowed to register as a presidential
candidate for upcoming elections.
Supporters of exiled Peruvian president Alberto
Fujimori protested in front of Peru's Congress on Tuesday
(December 14, 2004) to request that he be allowed to run for
re-election in 2006. He is banned from public office in
Peru until 2010.
"The only possible outcome is for Alberto Fujimori to
be president," said his deputy secretary in Peru Diego
Useda.
Mr. Fujimori, living in Japan since 2000, leads the
polls with 24 percent of respondents backing his candidacy
making him Peru's most popular politician.
Fujimori, 66, is accused of heading up a criminal
organization responsible for killing 23 people in 1991-92
and of forgery and embezzlement throughout his 10 year
presidency (1990-2000).
"If Alberto Fujimori comes back to the country he would
would first have to go court and he would not be able to
run for president because he has been prohibited to do so
by the Congress of the Republic," said Peruvian Congressman
Ediberto Benitez.
Fujimori denies any wrongdoing and has announced he
intends to run for president.
