- Story Text: Former Russian president Boris Yeltsin is in very good
health, according to the German clinic which examined him five
years after major heart bypass surgery.
Roland Hetzer, director of the German Heart Centre
in Berlin, said on Monday (December 17) that the 70-year-old
former Russian leader had come to Germany to seek a second
opinion after an examination by doctors in Moscow.
"We have found that the result of the heart operation five
years ago is still very good. His heart condition today is
still considerably better than before the operation and
overall this is a very good result," Hetzer said.
Yeltsin was first elected in 1991 and his second term as
president was marked by long absences from the public eye and
frequent stays in hospital because of heart, respiratory and
other ailments.
Soon after re-election for a second term in 1996, Yeltsin
told the Russian public he was to have major heart surgery and
the Kremlin admitted he had suffered several heart attacks
during the election campaign.
Rumours have abounded since his resignation on New Year's
Eve 1999 of a sharp deterioration in his health and his public
appearances have become rarer.
