- Story Text: Portuguese President, Francisco da Costa Gomes returned to Lisbon on Saturday (4 October) to find the country in a worsening military crises. He hinted to newsmen that the nation could do with some of the discipline he found on his Polish and Soviet Union visits.
He said that he admired the will and determination of the Russians and the Poles in rebuilding their countries after the Second World War.
President Gomes said that their success was only possible because both Poland and the Soviet Union have planning, hierarchy--and discipline.
While the President was away, the disunity within the armed forces grew worse and the authorities have taken sterner measures to crack down on dissident leftist troops.
Prime Minister Admiral Jose Azevedo last week led a cheering crowd of supporters in a chant of "discipline. discipline" and told them it was necessary to re-establish discipline to overcome the anarchy which Portugal had lived through.
However, the left-leaning Copcon security force-whose commander Brigadier Carvalho was at the airport to greet President Gomes, has called incorrect accusations by Socialists against left wing army units, in particular, the left wing Lisbon Light Artillery Regiment.
