- Story Text: Former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic arrived on
Saturday at a special congress of his Socialist Party, rocked
by defeat in September's elections.
Milosevic denounced the mass uprising which forced him from
power and launched a fierce attack on his political opponents.
Milosevic, expected to be the only candidate for the post as
party president, walked into the main entrance of Belgrade's
Sava Centre on Saturday, accompanied by security guards.
The former Yugoslav President, who received a standing
ovation from delegates, said his opponents were trying to
rewrite the history of last year's NATO bombing campaign
against Yugoslavia.
"The situation is absurd. Those who defended the country
and were in the country during the war are declared as enemies
now," television pictures showed Milosevic telling the
congress, which was closed to most media organisations.
"Those who fled the country, supported the bombing and
co-operated with the aggressors are now appearing in the role
of patriots and saviours of the country," continued Milosevic.
Following the dumping of Milosevic as Yugoslav president,
a number of senior officials have left the once mighty
Socialist Party. Milosevic has only occasionally been seen in
public since the election.
