- Story Text: Colombia's President-elect Juan Manuel Santos was in Argentina on Monday (July 26) as Venezuela said it was beefing up its troop presence along its Colombian border as a diplomatic spat between the two countries worsened.
Santos is on a regional tour before assuming the presidency on August 07.
The tour was preplanned but after talks with Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, he also met with Fernandez' husband and UNASUR Secretary-General Nestor Kirchner, who is assisting mediation efforts in the Venezuelan feud.
Santos has been muted about the latest rift with Caracas, but Kirchner said their talks were constructive.
"We have to work hard to construct the coexistence of the Latin American people and the world. It hurts a lot, sometimes, when differences emerged between people in the region. We, Argentina, have suffered from these types of situations on many occasions and under no circumstance do we want these situations to repeat themselves. So that is why I say it was a, exemplary meeting, very good," Kirchner said.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez broke off diplomatic ties with Colombia last week, bringing the countries' troubled relations to a new low after Bogota alleged that his government allowed leftist Colombian rebels to operate bases there. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
