- Story Text: Argentine President Cristina Fernandez was said to be making a good recovery and was 'in good spirits' on Thursday (January 05) after the operation for thyroid cancer she underwent the previous day.
Supporters held a vigil for the 58-year-old president outside the hospital in Pilar, a suburb of Buenos Aires, holding up signs urging their leader to be strong. They even created a mini-altar, framed by her photograph and surrounded with floral offerings.
The government last week announced her diagnosis of papillary carcinoma, detected during a routine medical check-up just before Christmas. Doctors have said has a better than 90 percent chance of recovery.
Presidential spokesperson Alfredo Scoccimarro told the assembled crowds that Fernandez had responded well to the surgery.
"The Nation's President, Doctor Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, has completed her first post-operation day without complications," said Scoccimarro.
He added that she was well rested and had begun to walk around again.
"They have added that the results of clinical and laboratory studies have been within normal parameters. The nation's president had rested normally during the night, she has started to eat and walk, and she is in very good spirits," said Scoccimarro.
Fernandez won re-election in a landslide last October, a year after her husband, former president Nestor Kirchner, died suddenly from heart problems. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
