- Story Text: A Slovenian man making what he calls 'the cheapest trip around the globe' touched down in his ultra-light aircraft in Argentina on Thursday (February 02).
And beyond being cheap, Matevz Lenarcic hopes it will also be the cleanest trip an airplane has made around the world.
The Slovenian pilot and environmentalist is piloting this 640 pound craft, a Pipstrel Virus-SW914, thousands of miles to prove that cheap, clean air travel is possible.
Lenarcic touched down a day late in Argentina as he has faced ferocious summer storms in the southern cone.
He said beyond being an experiment in eco-friendly travel, it's an adventure.
"The flight around the world in this ultra-light aircraft is more for sport. Flying in such a small plane, many times in extreme conditions, is a real adventure. But this is really something more. It's the first time that a small amount of fuel will be consumed-- the least amount until now. It's the cheapest flight around the world. This is very important right now, a time when we need to move from the big and heavy to the small and light, do more with less," he said.
He added that he and his team are keeping track of the plane's emissions as they go.
"Besides we doing researching, measuring the levels of carbon dioxide we are putting into the atmosphere. The project is going along well. These types of studies have not been made on a plane until now," he said.
When it's all over, Lenarcic's trip will have covered around 60,000 miles, flying over 60 countries. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
