- Story Text: President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner hosted Irish President Michael Higgins late Thursday (October 11) at the government mansion as part of Higgins' two-week South American tour.
Higgins began his trip in Chile, where he met with President Sebastian Pinera, and next travelled to Brazil to meet President Dilma Rousseff and her predecessor, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Talks with the South American leaders have centred on boosting trade and tourism to Ireland whose economy has been battered by the euro zone crisis.
In between meetings with heads of state, Higgins has visited members of the Irish diaspora to pay tribute to Irish immigrants. He has also presented papers criticizing unregulated trade.
As a demonstration of the two countries' historic ties, Kirchner gave the president of Ireland jerseys from local soccer clubs named in honour of Admiral Guillermo Brown, the first Irish-born, nationalized Argentine admiral in Argentina's navy. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
