- Story Text: Argentine government announces that it has filed a lawsuit against Ghana at the United Nations Tribunal for the Law of the Sea over a detained miltary vessel held in the African country.
Argentina's foreign minister, Hector Timerman, announced on Wednesday (November 14) that a lawsuit had been filed at the United Nations Tribunal for the Law of the Sea regarding an Argentine military vessel held in Ghana.
"The measure solicits the Ghanaian government to immediately and unconditionally liberate the Libertad Frigate, so that it can leave the Port of Tema without delay," said Timerman.
"It [the tribunal] will discuss the Argentine government's claim that holds Ghana internationally responsible for wrongfully detaining the Libertad vessel and demands that the country provide compensation for the damages it caused Argentina by this illicit act, and to make amends for disregarding symbols of sovereignty that were defied in ignoring the ship's immunity," he added.
The frigate ARA Libertad, a naval training ship, was detained in Ghana's eastern port of Tema on Oct. 2 at the request of NML Capital Ltd, which claims Argentina owes it $300 million on bonds in default since 2002.
