- Story Text: Argentine President Cristina Fernandez and Uruguayan President Jose Mujica departed late Tuesday (March 05) for Caracas, Venezuela, to mourn the death of President Hugo Chavez.
The Latin American leaders joined other government officials for the trip to Caracas just hours after the Venezuelan government announced that the 58-year-old socialist leader had lost a two-year battle with cancer, marking the end of his tumultuous 14 years in power.
Argentine Senator Anibal Fernandez told reporters that Chavez stood by his country despite the political upheaval it experienced more than a decade ago, during the 2001 crisis.
"This is a very painful topic, at least for those who understand that Argentine policies were very compromised in 2001 and found in this president (Chavez) a friend, someone who lent us a hand when no one else wanted to lend a hand," he said.
Chavez will lie in state through Friday when a public funeral will be held with invited guests from across Latin America, the Venezuelan government announced late Tuesday. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
