- Story Text: Jubilant Argentines poured into churches on Wednesday (March 13) to celebrate the surprise announcement that one of their own - Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio - was the first Latin American pope.
The new pontiff took the name Pope Francis.
Catholic Ana Maria Mino was one of the many faithful who flocked to the city's central cathedral to rejoice.
"God bless him so that he can guide the people with wisdom and holiness," said Mino.
Spokesperson for the Archbishop, Jose San Martin, was overjoyed at the news of an Argentine pope, although he said that having a pope in the church was the most important factor.
"Certainly it's incredibly exciting for both the heart and the mind. In the first place, beyond whether or not it's Bergoglio, it's the presence of a pope in the church that is truly the vicar of Christ, the successor of Peter. But how great it is to know that it's him [Bergoglio] with us, someone so good and who reflects the figure of the Father and the figure of the pastor," said San Martin.
Catholic Sergio Balvo voiced his delight in having an Argentine at the helm of the Vatican.
"I think it's incredible to be living through this period with an Argentine pope. I think that Bergoglio is a saint," said Balvo.
In addition to being the first non-European pontiff in nearly 1,300 years, 76-year-old Bergoglio is the first-ever Jesuit to lead the Catholic Church. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
