- Story Text: Catholics in Buenos Aires congregated in the city's main cathedral on Thursday (March 14) to celebrate the midday mass with an Argentine pope at the helm in the Vatican.
Former cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, who has taken the name Pope Francis, was elected as leader of the Roman Catholic Church on Wednesday (March 13).
A picture of the new pontiff was placed on the door of the South American capitals' central cathedral.
As devotees filed in for mass, some stopped to snap a picture of the man making history as the Vatican's first-ever Latin American pope.
Father Ricardo said that people should expect Pope Francis to follow in his predecessors' conservative footsteps.
"I think that yes, he [Pope Francis] will follow in his [Benedict's] footsteps. Remember that he is a Jesuit, remember that he is a faithful follower of Saint Ignatius of Loyola and he is going to opt for the conservative, for the traditional. But we will see, no one can predict what he is going to change. We are confident that he is assisted by the Holy Spirit and that God does things in a perfect way, that he doesn't make mistakes," said Father Ricardo.
Displaying his conservative orthodoxy, Francis has spoken out strongly against gay marriage, denouncing it in 2010 as "an attempt to destroy God's plan," and is expected to pursue the uncompromising moral teachings of Benedict and John Paul II, but with a great concern for the poor, something he has voiced as one of his principal concerns. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
