- Story Text: Argentine Catholics flooded to mass on Sunday (March 17) to celebrate newly-elected Pope Francis, a fellow Argentine.
Parishioners packed the cathedral in Buenos Aires, waving papal flags and carrying photos of Francis, who was announced as Pope on Wednesday (March 13). He was formerly known as Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio.
Francis is Latin America's first pontiff, breaking some 1,300 years of European papacies.
Apostolic Nuncio to Argentina, Archbishop Emil Paul Tscherrig, celebrated the mass and asked Argentines to pray for Pope Francis.
"Today, dear brothers, we promise to continue praying for our Pope Francis and accompanying him in the difficult mission that the Lord has trusted him with, with our love and friendship. We also send to Rome our profound gratitude for all the good that has been done for the Argentine Church, for its pastoral charity, for its leadership and for the example of its life," he said.
