- Story Text: A television spot recorded before Pope Francis was elected to lead the Roman Catholic Church features the then Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Jorge Bergoglio, sending an Easter message to Argentines.
The spot was reportedly recorded shortly after Pope Benedict announced he was stepping down as pontiff in February and before, then still a Cardinal, Bergoglio made his way to the Vatican for the conclave that ended when he was elected as the new pope.
The spot begins by explaining that the footage was recorded before the conclave at the Vatican, though the fact that Bergoglio had it filmed before heading to Rome could be a sign he thought he might not be back in the country in time to film it.
"Nobody has greater love than he who gives his life for his friends. He [pointing to a statue of Jesus Christ] gave it for us, for you, for me. He regained it and he accompanies us with his full life. Let him accompany you. He loves you. Easter is Jesus living," Bergoglio said in the spot.
Spots like this one were a tradition for the cardinal who used the forum to send Easter and Christmas messages to Argentina every year.
The first Jesuit pope inherited a Church mired in scandals of sexual abuse and the leak of confidential documents alleging corruption and rivalry between cardinals inside the Church government or Curia.
Pope Francis, who used to give Mass here at the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral, set the tone for a new, humbler papacy at his inaugural Mass last week where he called for the Church to defend the weak and protect the environment. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
