- Story Text: Brazilian officials travel to Argentina to talk trade ahead of Mercosur summit
Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff and Argentine President Cristina Fernandez both attended the conference along with their foreign ministers and businessmen from the neighbouring nations.
The conference was set up by Argentina's Industrial Organisation (UIA), which extended the invitation to Rousseff.
Brazil is Argentina's top trade partner, with annual trade equalling about 2.5 billion dollars.
Brazilian Foreign Minister Antonio de Aguiar Patriota said his nation, currently the world's sixth largest economy, is looking to step up a place as global economic dynamics shift.
"It's very possible that Brazil be in the fifth position or in the fourth position in economic terms, but the top economies will be very different than they are today. Because it's possible that China will be number one, India number two and the United States number three. It's a different world we must comprehend," Patriota said.
Brazil and Argentina are South America's number one and number two economies, and Patriota pointed out that the nations make up a huge part of Latin America's economy and land.
"Together, Argentina and Brazil make up the fifth largest economy with a GDP of nearly three trillion dollars, a market of 150 million people, an area that makes up 70 percent of South America and more than 50 percent of Latin America-- all these things that Professor Marco Aurelio mentioned in the areas of energy, agriculture, industry and others," he said.
In the past years, Brazil has vaulted into the short list of top economies, but a recent slump prompted Rousseff to take stimulus measures like lowering taxes and tariffs.
Argentina's economy, which had been growing at a steady clip since 2003, has also slowed.
Argentine Foreign Minister Hector Timerman said the global economic crisis had put emerging nations on the defensive for the time being.
"In the short term, the crisis of the most advanced nations obligates us to confront this adverse international stage and try to defend the region from the backlash of this crisis. Right now, that means working together to avoiding being the losers of this trade battle led by the industrialised nations who, because of a lack of internal demand, look to narrow the margins of the economic legitimacy of the emerging nations to dump their excess goods on our dynamic internal markets," he said.
The Mercosur summit will take place in Brazil on December, with Venezuela and Uruguay attending. Member Paraguay is suspended because of a lightening-quick impeachment of former president Fernando Lugo that brought criticism from neighbours. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
