In 2011 we reached a record level, 40 billion dollars, but we know that this is not very much, that it is insufficient considering our scale, for the size of our countries and for what we surely represent in the international sphere. This year we are going to have lower numbers that will come in at 34 billion dollars, which is the second best performance in our history. Undoubtedly, we have to overcome the commercial imbalances between our countries, reduce the asymmetries and find a relation that goes beyond the trade framework and return to a productive business relationship." VARIOUS OF PEOPLE APPLAUDING (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) ARGENTINE PRESIDENT, CRISTINA FERNANDEZ, SAYING: "We cannot, if the global crisis is prolonged, sustain this if we don't make definitive strategic and complimentary integration partnerships, not only with Brazil, which is our main partner, but also with our brothers of the Pacific, because we have to think about not only Brazil and Argentina, but also of Argentina and Brazil as the two big pulleys of the region so that South America can truly be a protagonist in the 21st century, this is the key." - Story Text: Brazil and Argentina continued trade talks on Wednesday (November 28) during the two-day event leading up to the December Mercosur summit in Brasilia.
Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff and Argentine President Cristina Fernandez attended the conference set up by Argentina's Industrial Organization (UIA), along with foreign ministers and business people from the two South American neighbours.
President Rousseff underlined the importance of not only increasing trade between the regions' most powerful economies, but also the need to overcome commercial imbalances.
"Ten years ago, trade between the two countries did not exceed 7 billion dollars. Undoubtedly, we have to overcome the commercial imbalances between our countries, reduce the asymmetries and find a relation that goes beyond the trade framework and return to a productive business relationship," said Rousseff.
Argentina's Fernandez spoke about her vision of the two countries as "pulleys" for the rest of South America.
"We cannot, if the global crisis is prolonged, sustain this if we don't make definitive strategic and complimentary integration partnerships, not only with Brazil, which is our main partner, but also with our brothers of the Pacific, because we have to think about not only Brazil and Argentina, but also of Argentina and Brazil as the two big pulleys of the region so that South America can truly be a protagonist in the 21st century, this is the key," said Fernandez.
Brazil and Argentina are South America's number one and number two economies, and, as such, make up a huge part of Latin America's economy and land. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
