- Story Text: Argentina's WBC middleweight champion Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez and British challenger Martin Murray officially weighed in on Friday (April 26) ahead of their highly anticipated bout on Saturday (April 27) in Buenos Aires.
Murray is facing an uphill battle as he hopes to strip Martinez of the championship belt on his home turf in front of an expected crowd of more than 40,000 screaming Argentines.
Martinez has reached iconic status in the South American country where he beat out goal record-breaking soccer player Lionel Messi as Argentina's sport personality of the year in 2012.
The Argentine officially tipped the scale at 72.253 kilograms (159.29 pounds) compared to Murray's 70.064 kilograms (154.46 pounds).
The bout, which will be aired on television to millions of Argentines rooting for the home-grown hero, has a political twist as tensions between Buenos Aires and London have been simmering over Argentina's claims to the Falkland Islands, known as Las Malvinas in Argentina.
The 38-year-old Argentine's record is 50-2-2, while Murray, 30, has won 25 fights with 10 knockouts and drawn one. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
