- Story Text: Joyous scenes in Buenos Aires on Tuesday (April 30) night as Argentine and Dutch nationals celebrated the coronation of new Dutch King Willem-Alexander alongside his Argentine-born wife Queen Maxima.
Dutch royal fever has gripped Argentina after Queen Beatrix, 75, retired after 33 years in the role, paving the way for Holland's first Argentine queen.
Breaking out for an impromptu tango in honour of the new Dutch king and queen, revelers said the coronation was a historic occasion for both countries.
"It's an honour for me as President of the Holland Club to host everyone on this special day with a unique festival and an "orange" experience. Today was a historic day for our countries," said the President of Argentina's Holland Club, Daniel Das.
Willem-Alexander's coronation saw him become the first king of the Netherlands since 1890 and his wife Maxima the country's first Argentine queen.
Sending a delegation of Argentine government officials to attend the royal coronation, President Cristina Fernandez said Dutch Queen Maxima still has Argentine blood running through her veins.
"She's an Argentine and so the Vice President of the Republic (of Argentina) (Amado Boudou) is there. Obviously, to be the queen of Holland she needs to be Dutch, but that is not to say she does not have Argentine blood in her veins," she declared.
Although granted Dutch citizenship by royal decree, Maxima had chosen to hold onto her Argentine citizenship and has visited her home country various times since becoming princess. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
