- Story Text: Several workers' groups marched on Buenos Aires city hall Tuesday (April 30) to denounce the city's response to a rally outside a hospital last Friday (April 26) that ended with dozens of people injured.
Demonstrators marched from the historic Avenida de Mayo to the offices of Mayor Mauricio Macri, who they blamed for the clashes outside the Borda psychiatric hospital. During the demo, metropolitan police fired rubber bullets.
Dozens of protesters were injured during the incident. At least 10 police officers were injured.
Friday's demonstration was mostly made up of hospital workers and unionists opposed to the city's plan to tear down a "workshop" they said was used for activities for patients and hospital workers at the mental health facility to make room for a new civic centre planned by the city.
The city says the building set for demolition has long been in disuse.
But on Tuesday, the union workers were joined by government workers and other social groups as they denounced the city's response to the Friday demo, characterizing it as "police repression".
"Our people, since the unfortunate, but also glorious conference the 19th and 20th of December 2001, said, 'never again to neo-liberalism' and 'never again to repression'. So, there is no room for this policy in the city. Today we've come to say 'never again' one more time and whenever it needs to be said," the secretary general of the Association of State Workers, Humberto Rodriguez said, referring to civil unrest in Argentina in 2001.
In addition to the rally, several workers groups announced 24 - 48 hour work stoppages. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
