- Story Text: Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro rallied thousands of supporters at a Buenos Aires football stadium on Wednesday (May 08) as part of regional tour to drum up support from allies amid rising political tensions back home over his disputed win in elections marred by allegations of widespread fraud.
Applauding Latin American leftists such as Argentina's late Presidents Juan Peron and Nestor Kirchner, the 50-year-old former bus driver declared to thousands of adoring Argentine supporters that he was the man to see through his predecessor's vision of "Chavista" socialism .
"If anything is guaranteed to the people of Venezuela with the power of the revolution it is continued democracy, mobilisation, power, wide freedoms, an active people, increasingly organised and educated. If someone guarantees democracy and peace in Venezuela it is this working-class president, Chavista, Peronista, Kirchnerista, (those) who are here. Hugo Chavez left (this) man of the people behind so the homeland can continue its course."
Maduro is facing a test of his political legitimacy in deeply polarised Venezuela. Though anointed by Chavez as his successor in his last public speech, Maduro beat opposition candidate Henrique Capriles by only 1.5 percentage points in contrast to Chavez's 11 point victory over the same rival last year.
