- Story Text: British Actor Joseph Fiennes and American actor David Mazouz star in the upcoming action adventure children's film "The Games Maker" currently in production in Argentina.
The film's director, Argentine filmmaker, Pablo Buscarini, says the movie could change the way we think about the making of children's films.
An international crew has come together to produce the film which will be entirely shot in digital 3D over 11 weeks in Argentina.
Mazouz, of the American television series "Touch," told Reuters he has enjoyed working with the international crew while filming in the South American country.
"I love Argentina, I mean, I'm learning Spanish more. I knew a little bit before and I'm expanding a little bit, and I love learning languages, and really just everybody is so nice here. It's just awesome. Everything I could ask for," Mazouz said.
The young actor plays Ivan Drago, a 10-year-old boy who enters a mysterious game-making competition that leads him to a dark unknown world full of mystery.
The film is based on the 2003 children's novel "El Inventor de Juegos" written by Argentine writer, Pablo de Santis.
The film is one of the most ambitious being made in Argentina which has a strong filmmaking history which includes six Academy Awards nominations for Best Foreign Language Film and two wins, 2009's "The Secret in Their Eyes" and 1985's "The Official Story".
Buscarini, who also wrote the screenplay with Santis, said the creation and filming of the movie in Argentina could be the start of a new way to look at filmmaking for international audiences which is dominated by Hollywood.
"I think "The Games Maker" opens up a new perspective of how to think about children's cinematic content generation for mass audiences, from Argentina or Latin America, because it is both creating the stories and from there (also) owning the copyright. That means to have the autonomy to decide how we want to do it and where we want to do it, but also that the project has values that captivate international partners that will join and who allow you to get the budget so that afterwards, what you have on paper, can become a dream come true," Buscarini said.
In order to create the film in his home country Buscarini called on talent from around the world as well as from Argentina itself.
The film is being produced by Argentina's Pampa Films, Miravista (the Latin American branch of the Walt Disney Company), Canada's Sepia Films as well as Italy's DAP.
Much of the highly technical post-production, special effects and soundtrack will be done in Canada.
British Actor Joseph Fiennes plays Morodian, the owner of the mystifying Deep Games Company running the competition young Ivan enters.
"I don't know if I want my kids to see me as a villain when they watch this, but you know, I don't know if he's a villain. I'd like to think that you approach as an actor a character maybe he's misunderstood, but it's fun, and it's a fun part. And he's only in it for a little bit which means you can have a bit more fun with it, but I'm enjoying it so far," Fiennes told Reuters.
The film will is expected to hit the big screen world-wide in 2014 and will be distributed by Buena Vista International. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
