- Story Text: Argentine Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich accused Royal Dutch Shell of being "conspiratorial" against Argentina's interests on Monday (February 3) after the company raised its priced at the pump by 12 percent.
"Shell's attitude and that of its highest official in Argentina is always conspiratorial and always against the country's interests," Capitanich said.
Prices at Shell service stations shot up 12 percent from midnight on Monday morning.
The hike comes after a recent devaluation of the Argentine peso and could lead to other fuel companies raising their prices as well.
"But, as always, this company which, contrary to the country's interests, contrary to the interests of the Argentine people, is taking a unilateral decision to harm those who consume fuel," Capitanich said.
When asked if the government would look to sanction the oil company Capitanich left the decision open and quoted Argentina's famous former president, Juan Domingo Peron.
"We are going to repeat a famous quote from [former Argentine President Juan Domingo] Peron. 'Better than saying is doing, and better than promising is accomplishing'," he said before leaving a news conference at the presidential palace in Buenos Aires. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
